QLD: Former stockman tells of horror accident

A former stockman has told an inquest of the last moments of his two mates lives before
a police vehicle struck them as it plunged into a bush track wash-out.

WILL FOWLER was with ANDREW HILL and ALAN TOOHEY on Anzac Day eve last year in an unregistered,
unroadworthy utility when it was spotted by a police patrol on Cape York.

The police pursued the ute, which drove into a large washout on the road and toppled over.

Mr FOWLER says his two friends were climbing out of the ute behind him when the police
vehicle hurtled into the 2.9 metre deep washout, hitting them both.

The two men died at the scene.

Under cross-examination from counsel for the two police officers, Mr FOWLER said Mr
HILL, who was driving, knew the wash-out was there.

Mr FOWLER agreed it could be described as a concealed death trap if travelling at high speeds.
